RE: Favorite Long Term Location

We are planning to go to El Golfo with the CRA. Has anyone been there and if so - would you go again? There's not much there except CRA, unless you have an ATV - then it's heaven. Don't wander around the town, especially at night. Lots of drug movement & meth heads. Good for maybe 3 days, IMO. We drove down for a day two years ago just to check it out. It was not our cup of tea. We agree with the above. The main activity seemed to be riding around on ATV's and we don't have one. We didn't hang around very long.

RE: De Anza Trails RV in Tubac, AZ

Since I live locally I tried the phone and got the same results. So I jumped the the truck and drove over there. This this the short story. The Past Owners have taken the property back. They ARE OPEN! You can reach them at Don, (573)434-5550 or Jim, (520)444-5021. Don is setup in Space 74 and is acting as Camp Host. The property is being sold again. There was a $25 sign on the gate. I believe they are running at a min. until the New Owners take over. It is OPEN! There was about 5 RVs there at this time. Take care. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico WoW! It doesn't get any better than this. Thank You. We desperately needed mail forwarded before we cross the border. Thank You for this info. I will call them. Gracias, tu eres muy amable. I just spoke to Don and have arranged everything. You made my day

RE: Violence in Morelia

It saddens me to say so, but the recent escalation in crime and the nature of that crime is altering our plans. We are still going to Mexico right away soon, but not to many of the places we had planned. How long will we stay? Who knows! Will we return next year? Remains to be seen.

RE: Arizona Options

Apache Junction is a favorite for us. There is so much to do in the area and wonderful drives to take. Great rockhounding for those who are interested. There are a number of parks that are reasonable and offer a wide range of services. Be sure and drive the Apache Trail. It needs to be done at least twice -- once from each direction.

RE: Escapees RV Club

We belonged for one year back in 1994-95. It was not our style. Seems like every time we went in to get a site, the people in the office wanted to hug us, know us or not. I don't appreciate that. Others seem to like the outfit and/or do not object to the hugging. Maybe they don't do that anymore. My hugs are reserved for people special to me. We're happier with Good Sam. When they come at DH, he always tells them he bought the "hug free" membership! We agree. The hugging is annoying!

RE: 10-year Hologram

I would love to know before I send it off. After all, these forms that you found linked on the Church's site are from a couple years back. I won't be getting my notarized letter from the dealer until I go to MSP next month. We haven't sent ours off yet -- procrastinating. We should because a broken windshield could really mess up the works since we both now have a 10-yr hologram. However, we talked to someone who said his parents were successful in getting it cancelled thru D.F., but that it took over 8 months. That was two years ago. Maybe this will get us into gear. Get 'er done!

RE: El Caracol Sold

So what is the plan for this rv park, condominiums? I have received more emails from real esate agents in Baja than you can shake a stick at. Even on cable here they recently did a show in English on condos in Mazatalan. Somebody has money, and it is coming from the U.S. Just last year people were buying condos in Maz for 170K, now I am receiving ads for 300,000 dollars and up. Amazing! I wish I had money, I would open an rv park. They say, build it and they will come. I don't know how true that would be on the East coast. I don't see condos working in this spot. We priced it when we were there and talked to the woman who owned it. There is a lot of land --the deed for part of it was in question, but if memory serves, it was around 3,000 acres give or take. There are homes on the property, some that were quite lovely in better days and could be again. The pool was in disrepair and closed, the restaurant had been trashed and the structure burned by a traveling pilgrimage after she allowed them to stay there for free. It could certainly be developed into a lovely resort or dude ranch type place. It also could be a magical place to live if someone had enough money to keep it private and just graze cattle. The views and landscaping are amazing. Does anyone know what the new buyer has in mind? Wish we could have afforded it . . .

RE: El Caracol Sold

From their ad. This is quite a loss and will put a lot of pressure on the remaining parks. El Caracol RV Park Located at km 37 on the Navojoa - Alamos highway at the foot of the Naracharamba Mountain. 104 large pull through, full-service RV sites with mountain spring water on 3,000 acres. Pool, bird sanctuary. Bus to town at the gate. It was an amazing park in a great setting, but two years ago it was empty except for us. It had been allowed to run down, and the sites were riddled with tarantula holes and fire ant mounds. I am surprised to hear its loss will put pressure on the other parks. We were there in prime time and nothing was full. Did we miss something?

RE: A point to ponder!

There is nothing in Mexico that you can't find in the USA. We prefer to stay in our own great country where there are still millions of places to go and see that we haven't been to yet. I think if you would get out and look, you'd be surprised. Mexico is not a carbon copy of the US. We see plenty there we wouldn't find in the US, and vice versa. But then, how would you know?

RE: When ya leaving? Where ya crossing?

It doesn't look like high fuel prices are keeping anyone home! Of course, it is less expensive to drive than to stay and heat a home all winter. . . and a lot more fun! :)

RE: 10-year Hologram

Now that EdT got his question answered. Here's my question. I too was given the 10 year hologram when I went in Dec, 2006 - wasn't given any choice actually. When I left, it was with the intention of coming back the next winter. As happens in life, things change. Not only could I not return to MX, I ended up selling the RV. Since I am in North Dakota... a quick run to the border to return the hologram wasn't exactly possible. I carefully removed the hologram (with the help of tape) and have the paperwork from the border... and the bill of sale from the RV. If I head down to MX again in the next couple of years with a vehicle, am I going to be able to cross with this? Or do I need to find a Mexican Consulate in the US to do this? (Phoenix? Tucson?) Has anyone done this yet? And BTW, I had just renewed my passport before I went... This happened to us. You cannot get past the border with what you have, and a consulate will not be able to help you. We have tried both. In our case, since there were two of us, we simply registered the new MH in the other spouse's name. We were given a form to send with all the necessary papers to D.F. to cancel the hologram, and they say it can take up to 8 months or longer to get it done. However, we have been told that if you have proof that you have sent everything and are in a holding pattern, they will honor that. We were given the papers at a consulate to take care of it, and we were also given papers at KM 21 in Nogales. I think I read on here somewhere that they are also available on-line. Maybe someone can jump in and tell you where the site is. Good luck.

RE: When ya leaving? Where ya crossing?

Rocmoc, I envy you folks that can get away for weeks/months at a time! As for this working stiff I'm Gonna try to get out to El Golfo de Santa Clara, Sonora on Labor Day weekend to do some riding. If it's to hot we'll postpone until the end of September. Usually spend the the night at Cocopahs' Casino, Somerton, AZ., crossing @ San Luis Rio Colorado, MX. The free parking usually ends up costing me a couple of hundred bucks but it's good to be "humbled" once in a while. As a backup looked into booking Campland on the Bay, San Diego that weekend (www.campland.com) Rates for a beachfront site, $273.00 per day, if you want to go slumming a bayview site will set you back $194.25 per day, all sites have a three day minimum. To my chagrin it was booked solid! Have a safe trip everyone. PS whats up the the spellcheck? Boy, I know what you mean. Start October, these guys really know how to rub it in. Pictures of sunsets, shrimp dinners, margs, weekend trips to Maz and PV. I don't think I'll be able to take it :B. The shrimp dinners really get to me. The fact that we can get away sooner only means we are a lot older! Your turn will come. I can remember when I used to envy others who were able to spend months on end in the Southwest and I always had to get back to work. Now it's my turn. Soon enough you will have the months on end, and we will be getting fitted for walkers! :)

RE: Food Stuffs allowed and NOT allowed!

We were given a print-out at the border, and beef is allowed according to it.

RE: MX Speed Limits

I don't know if acting dumb is the best route. I find a good working knowledge of Spanish and a confident, in control attitude (yet respectful) seemed to work for me. Agree. I have found that a good command of the language earns you a lot of respect, and the conversation often turns from what the original issue was to "Where did you learn to speak Spanish like that?" After a friendly conversation for a couple of minutes, we're off.

RE: Cell coverage in Mexico

We went to satellite because we found that the WiFi in many parks is not that stable. It may not reach all sites, and during peak hours it is overloaded. Since we need internet for business when on the road, and because we have family scattered all over Kingdom Come, we did not want to be tied to parks that could offer good WiFi. In so many parks, one refrain often heard among RVers is, "Are you able to get on line today?"

RE: Cell coverage in Mexico

Or just use Skype out on your computer. Internet connections are easy to find and Skype out is about 2 cents per minutes. SKYPE doesn't work very well for those of us with internet satellite.
